Nintendo then released the black and white portable system, the Nintendo Game Boy in 1989, and late in its life would resurrect the Mario / Donkey Kong rivalry in a new title internally named "Donkey Kong '94" during development, and confusingly just "Donkey Kong" on release.ĭespite sharing the same name as the arcade original, the gameplay differed greatly. Once home consoles exploded, Mario would gain popularity starring in the Super Mario Bros series on Nintendo NES (including the fantastic Super Mario Bros 3, which we've played previously in this series). Prior to home consoles, the series saw several titles make it to Nintendo's " Game and Watch" single-game portable hardware.
Nintendo would make sequels to the game including " Donkey Kong Jr." again for arcade where the roles were reversed, and Mario was the villain, locking away Donkey Kong, and forcing his son to rescue him.
The arcade game was notorious for its difficulty as well as simplicity (the latter being a product of the times and limited hardware). Jumpman/Mario would have to ascend the tower to rescue her, only to have Donkey Kong get mad and climb higher. The game concept was very simple - the angry King Kong style gorilla would steal away the damsel in distress Pauline (who would most recently surface as Mayor of New Donk City in "Super Mario Odyssey" for Nintendo Switch), and take her atop a high tower.
